Two Weeks Old!

Avery is two weeks old today!  We're all getting adjusted to our new household pretty well, and I think things have been going pretty smoothly.

After we got home from the hospital, Avery decided that nursing *wasn't* the easiest thing ever.  Of course he had to do just fine when we were in the hospital full of support.  He had a hard time latching correctly which was painful for me and frustrating for him.  It was such a weird experience for him to be right there in front of it and screaming his head off because he wanted it NOW!  Frustrating for me too.  Luckily, I think we've got it mostly figured out now.  I read lots of articles and recommendations and tried all sorts of things to get him to latch a little easier and it seems to be going pretty well.  A couple times a day, we'll still have a feeding where he can't get it together, but even then it only takes 5 minutes or so to get him to latch, not 20 or 30!  As for the actually feedings, once he's on, it's pretty easy, so that part has not been difficult.  I tried pumping a couple times and he was still all discombobulated with the bottle, and I hate pumping, so it's not worth it.  ;)  However, I need to get over that hating pumping thing if I'm ever going to leave him.  Oh well.

Evelyn has been fantastic with her baby brother.  She is so sweet and loving with him.  She always wants to hold him (and she's done well holding him too - with us right beside her of course), and love on him..  She's learned that she can point out his body parts, but not to touch his eyes!  Ha!  Carl has been off work since Avery was born, so that has been a HUGE help.  He gets Evelyn up in the morning and plays with her while I sleep and/or feed Avery.  It's going to be a big adjustment when Carl goes back to work next week!  Luckily, Evelyn has been good about sitting next to me instead of getting into trouble when I'm nursing.

Avery has been sleeping pretty well.  He usually has one wide awake period during the day, but otherwise sleeps 2 1/2-4 hours.  4 hour stretches are a blessing, and pretty rare, but 3 hours is the norm and I can handle that most of the time.  The last few times he's only woken up twice during the night, but then last night he had another every 1 1/2-2 hours he wanted to eat.  Silly boy!

He sleeps pretty well despite all the racket going on here during the day.  He does fuss a little when he doesn't want to sleep or eat or anything, but those times he's been pretty content if I put him in the moby wrap.  In fact, thats where he is now!  ;)

Overall, things are going pretty well.  A few hiccups here and there, but that's to be expected!  Hopefully things will keep on this track next week when it's just me and the two kiddos for 8 hours a day!
