Of course the morning we had plans to get up and go early, she sleeps in. That's just how it works! I woke her up and she was dressed and in the car a few minutes later. We have been talking about going to the fair for a couple days, and I think my excitement rubbed off on Evelyn. Just walking from the parking lot, Evelyn was saying "WOAH!" to everything and clapping. Before we even got in the gate! Silly girl!
Our first stop was to the Forest Service area. I haven't been over there, but we could see a big "digger" and helicopter from the gate, so Evelyn really wanted to check it out. She wasn't so fond of Smokey the Bear, but she loved seeing the helicopter and bulldozer.
Evelyn is all about farms and animals right now, so I knew she would love seeing the animals and tractors. We spent lots of time in the Children's Barnyard, and even though she couldn't touch any of the animals, she liked being able to look right into the chicken and rabbit cages. She was all about chickens today. It was very funny! She didn't care too much for the old tractors, but she liked the "souped up" ones some of the NC State students had modified.
Walking around, we saw the pony rides. I was not about to pay for a pony ride that my child wouldn't tolerate. However, there was no one else around, and the operator let Evelyn go up and see the ponies first. She was all "horsies! horsies!" not scared at all of the live animals. So I caved and she went on a pony ride. She loved it! Of course, after the video she started laughing and talking up a storm. :) But well worth $5 for a ride she enjoyed!
We did lots of walking, and looking at exhibits. Evelyn really did well in the stroller while we were walking around, but she'd get a little restless while we were in the buildings. Of course, that's what I wanted to see, so a bag of pretzels and we're good for 20 minutes or so. Haha! I got to see my quilt (no ribbon :( but it was neat to see it hanging up anyways!) and a few things my mom made.
After checking out some of the exhibits, we rode some rides for Evelyn. She kept pointing at the slow little train, so we rode that and then the carousel. Nothing else seemed to catch her attention, so that was all we did. Plus there was an across the board "No kids under 36 inches" and a big rule board that said kids less than 2 shouldn't ride anything. Right. So that was kind of a bummer.
We did lots more walking and looking at stuff. We spent a while watching the cow competitions, and then checking out some of the other animals in the Expo center. Evelyn really enjoyed seeing the chickens and pigs.
I think Evelyn's favorite thing was the Marbles/WUNC tent. First of all, whoever decided to put these two together is a GENIUS! It took Evelyn forever to even walk in the tent because she kept going up to the wooden cutouts of PBS Characters and hugging them. Once she got in there though she would not leave! They had some fun toys for kids to play with, and we were probably in there for 30 minutes! I think I had finally convinced her to leave, and Read-A-Roo walked out. Game over, mom loses! Evelyn ran up to her and was so excited! She kept waving and giving her a hug. That must be one good costume, because Read-A-Roo didn't trip over Evelyn once! Haha! Luckily it was kind of slow at the time, so Evelyn had lots of time to play with Read-A-Roo herself, but she still "photo-bombed" a few peoples' pictures. Oh well- at least she's cute and she didn't have crud all over her! Haha! :)
We did indulge in some fair food, but not a ton. Al's French Fries, BBQ for lunch, Fried Samoas (yummy!), and a frozen banana that Evelyn devoured. The down side of going to the fair 35 weeks pregnant is that there's just not a ton of room for all that delicious food! :) Don't worry, I'm already trying to plan going again before Sunday! And maybe some of the food places will be open Monday when I go to pick up my quilt!
By the middle of the afternoon, Evelyn was getting tired, but there was just too much going on. I thought she would pass out soon, and wanted to go check out one more building if she was going to be asleep anyways, but she just kept seeing something that grabbed her attention. We decided to head back to the car, and of course, Evelyn fell asleep on the way out. :)
We really had a fun day. Evelyn is still talking about it, and I'm glad she enjoyed it as much as I had hoped she would! :)
